"The
wonderful, fantastical, too amazing to be for real photo re-collection
of each moment as it actually happened"
Doug and
Karla left beautiful Nashville, TN and boarded a plane bound for the
city known for the newness of its York, hence the term, New York.
While the standard look on Doug's face for the whole trip was
one of general disgust for reasons unknown to anyone, a good time
was had by all. But mostly by Greg Long who Doug and Karla met in the
Nashville airport and flew on the same flight to New York. Greg
was bored enough to take a photo with the pair and thank goodness,
Greg's management sat in front of Doug and Karla and was able to
provide sufficient complaining material for the remainder of the
flight.
Once
they arrived in New York, #1 on the priority list was to get some food
and get it fast. So they popped into the ESPN
Zone restaurant and were able to catch some football before the
meal. And we all know Karla loves a good football game! Sports aside
though, the food
was exquisite and Doug and Karla stopped bantering each other for
five minutes so they could
stuff their respective faces. And who said playing sports requires
a healthy diet? Doug actually gained five pounds from this one meal!
After
the meal they went to enjoy some classic New York culture by attending
a dramatic
representation of Beauty and the Beast. Drama is like radio but
there are a few more elements added. Something about costumes and
acting or some such nonsense. Give me an animal joke or ignoramus
question any day!
The
next day they finally got to the meat of the trip. They were able to
witness
the Newsboys
being given
their golden records for "Step up to the Microphone",
their last album before "Love,
Liberty, Disco". This took place
on a cruise around the NY harbor.
After this
they took a walk around NY, Central Park and saw other New York
landmarks, cityscapes,
etc. Karla's favorite moment by far was in the park. A little New York
dog (possibly from the Bronx, we don't know) was relaxing
and...well...he was loving,
libertying, and discoing his leg all over the trees. Luckily for
Doug, this dog was not an airborne pigeon. Later
in the day Doug was targeted by one of these pesky pigeons and
hit. Score - Pigeons: 1 - Doug: 0. But he purchased
some food while on the walk too, which makes up for everything.
Just for future reference, the difference between a NY mugger and NY
food concessions is the food guy has a state granted license to take
your money. However, muggers also make some mighty fine scones. That
night Doug and Karla got to experience a Cece
Winans concert and for once Doug smiled for the camera!!
Next
came the day of the broadcast. The infamous broadcast to end all
broadcasts. Everyone was wired and ready to go, but none
more so than Newsboy Phil was. Among the interviewees were the Newsboys,
Michelle Tumes,
Cece Winans,
and Margaret Becker. The D&K crew sat next to Chris
and Kerry from WCFL
in Chicago and the two radio teams were able to trade some quick
puns with each other.
After
the busy day of broadcasting Karla had a little time to enjoy the only
3 square feet of
natural grass in the city.
But like
any trip will do to the standard person, Doug
and Karla were beat after New York. A quick flight back home to
Nashville and a short nap and they were ready for anything once
again!!
