Update #1 (5/25/01)
Dear Friends of Doug and Karla,
First of all - thank you! Thank you so much for so many wonderful and touching
and kind emails. We are reading them all and will do our best to reply directly
to as many as possible. We have already received over 700 emails and didn't want
any more time to go by without a reply.
Since many of you asked the same questions we felt a general reply to everybody,
to start off with, would do best to help touch base with everyone.
Many asked "Where are you going?" - "What is happening?"
-- Basically, the management at the radio station has made a change in the
morning show. We made our first announcements on this Thursday the 17th, with
Friday the 18th being our last show. Our web site was taken down today (the
25th). While this sudden announcement saddens us, as we have really enjoyed
spending our mornings with you, we know that God has a plan for us. This has
been a very tough decision for management to make and they have told us it is a
decision that has come after much prayer. As we mentioned on our last day - the
station will continue, Christian Music will continue and God will also continue
to use it all. We thank God for the opportunity we had to share our lives with
you - and you, in turn, sharing with us.
Many asked "Where are you going?" ... "What's next?"
-- Not sure of the answer to that one. For the time being Karla will remain with
the radio station on the air from 11 pm to 6 am (Mon-Fri) beginning after the
mission trip ... Karla will also be joining WAY FM listeners on the Kosovo
Mission Trip in June . Doug is currently looking for where God would take him
next. We certainly desire to work together again on the radio - but we submit to
God's leading and guidance.
Thank you again for your powerful prayer support, and we again covet those
prayers as we look to our future. Feel free to keep in touch with us via e-mail.
On the personal front - (from Doug)
-- The family is doing great .. i've enjoyed this past week off ; getting to
sleep-in and play with Garic (Babyman) ... He is very much looking forward to
seeing the Shrek Movie, which we are going to see tonight ... Talk about the
power of marketing - a 2-and-a-half year old knows so much about this movie -
even before it was in the "movie house". My wife Sheryl, (the wisest woman I
know :) , is doing well and going strong into her 2nd book study at church -
"Really Bad Girls of the Bible" ... Lauren, my 12 year old, had a good run at
softball - although she did miss a few games because they started too late ((
remember that topic )) ... and we are all looknig forward to school being out.
Our prayer is to stay in our home in Franklin, TN - but we are ready to follow
God anywhere - anytime. God is using this time to stretch and grow us - and
remind us that we are in His hands.
On the personal front - (from Karla)
-- Over at Kamp Karla, Duncan the one eyed wonder dog is enjoying sleeping in as
well...he never was a "morning" dog anyway! He is dealing with the fact that his
photos will no longer reach (or scare) people via our website, but he realizes
that change is inevitable. Moo and Peekie the cats don't really care one way or
another, just as cats are inclined to do. and Karla..well,she is taking one day
at a time waiting to see what God has just around the corner. I'm working on a
cable comedy show and trying to learn Albanian for the mission trip . (How do
you say WOOOOOO WOOOOOO in Albanian?)
Thank you for being their for us - praying for us - and being family to us.
We love you and treasure our times together. Who knows what God has in the
future for us ? If nothing else - we'll have fun hangin' out in Heaven :)

________________________________________________
Currently I am still looking for the next place God would have me work. My
family's prayer is to stay here (in Franklin, TN). I had a couple of leads here
dry up - so we are putting the word out now across the country to see if anyone
has a radio need that Doug & Karla could fill.
We would love to stay together and use our talents - but above all we want to
follow where God leads.
Thank you so much for your email and prayer support !!! We truly feel those
prayers !! We will be keeping in touch and letting you know where God will have
us next.
Many of you have been asking about getting copies of our stories/jokes etc. We
are currently looking to launch our own D&K web site and will have all the old
web stuff posted ... we are also considering marketing a "Best of Doug & Karla
CD" as many have express interest in that ... we'll keep ya posted !!
In the meantime, I just want to share the words of my pastor - Mack Hannah, who
God called to a new mission field at Belmont University - and Mack has left our
church after 16 1/2 years. Mack says his focus with God is to "do the next right
thing" .. AMEN ... that's me - I just want to do the next right thing. I trust
in Christ - daily ... walking with Him daily and He's never going to drop me :)
Sometimes I don't understand or know "why" - but He does ... He wants me to
trust Him - daily ... and I want to honor Him and do the next right thing.
God Bless and thank you so much -

D*K Update #3 / (7/2/01)
Dear D&K Friends -
Welcome to email update #3 ... The highlight this time around is the good news
that Karla is returning to morning radio in Nashville!
Beginning this Thursday - July 5 - catch Karla with all the Nash-vegas traffic
on the Gerry House Show on WSIX (97.9FM "the Big 98").
"God opened up the door to this opportunity the day after I got back from
Kosovo, and He worked out all the details!...This will also allow me to take
care of my mom, Rita, who is having total knee replacement surgery on July 16th.
Working overnights would have made it difficult to take care of her, but
everything has worked out for this new schedule!"
As always we thank you for your prayers - and we covet those prayers also for
Rita regarding this surgery.
Also - our web site is back up !!! Missed out on the Duncan TUX picture ? A few
stories, jokes, etc. Tell a friend -

Thank you so much
Andy for all your help with our site !!! You "DA MAN"
(Awww...ain't
he sweet? -Andy)
F.Y.I. - This Thursday marks the 2 year "birthday" of our dougandkarla site.
We'll be looking to update this site as frequently as possible - so keep
checking back ...
?? Where's Doug ??
"Still waiting on the Lord. My family is doing well and we are still praying to
remain in town. I have heard from a few Christian stations (in other states),
but nothing concrete yet. Thank you so much for your prayers of support and
emails of encouragement. I have really enjoyed this time with my family, and
working part time for the Shepherd's Guide in Nashville (Christian Yellow Page
Publication). God always provides. God always teaches. I don't want to miss out
on any lessons He is teaching. Clinging to Jer.29:11 and God is teaching me
through Rom. 12:17-20 - I want to glorify Him in everything I do - He is who we
all work for."
?? SO - no more Doug & Karla ??
For right now, that appears to be the case, however we are still seeking God's
guidance in that area. We love to work together and would love to continue that
- but all according to God's will. Should He open a door for D&K - we certainly
will go running through it :)
Hungry ?? - Can you believe it - Doug & Karla are in a cookbook !
Coming soon to our web site info on the "Desert Streams Int'l Recipes" Cook Book
... including some mouth watering recipes from Doug's wife - Sheryl.

D*K Update #4
August 9, 2001
Welcome to "Doug & Karla Update # 4"
Hope all is well with you! We begin with some great news for Doug ...
God has provided a job - and my family is staying (YEAH!!). Thank you so much
for your prayer support. I'll be working for the Salem Radio Network,
headquartered in Nashville. (( Although it's not broadcast in Nashville )) It
provides the "Today's Christian Music" format to about 120 stations across the
US, including Canada and the Cayman Islands.
www.TodaysChristianMusic.com.
I'll be doing some fill-in work on the air - and on the weekends. I'll also be
working on the new Christian TOP 40 Satellite radio station called THE TORCH.
This will be one of 3 Christian stations that the Salem Network is providing for
XM Satellite. Satellite radio is the newest thing and involves putting a
Satellite receiver in your car (or home) and for a monthly fee you then have
access to about 100 different - very unique, very specific - radio formats. ((
Do note - 3 of these are Christian - the others, including "Liquid Metal" and
the uncensored rap channel - are NOT )).
www.XMRadio.com (we are channels 31,32, 170)
God has really provided for me and my family during this time. I have come to
understand a lot about - priorities, family, quiet time, and career. It's hard
for guys - as we define ourselves a lot by our jobs - and when that's gone - you
feel "less than adequate". But you know - God has reminded me - I am His kid -
1st / a husband to my wonderful wife Sheryl - 2nd / Daddy to Baby Man and Lauren
- 3rd / a friend and co-worker to my church family 4th / and somewhere after
that comes the job thing. Thank you so much for all the encouraging emails and
words of wisdom from so many who have been down this road. You know - we all go
through the valleys so we can come up the other side - and tell others - "God
brought me through".
Another wonderful thing I got to experience - was camp. Due to my availability
and the need for one more adult counselor - I when to Crosspoint camp in
Jefferson City, TN. Crosspoint is a sports/Christian camp put on by Lifeway. It
was great, an awesome time to hang with 4th-8th graders at my church(Harpeth
Heights), and other churches from around the country - including the cool kids
of Belle Aire Baptist church in Murfreesboro. One week away from the stress of
everything - with daily worship - was wonderful. God is so good. Also God has
provided a job for Sheryl. My wife has taken a job with our churches Pre-School.
This also gets BABYMAN in a pre-school environment. The 37 pounder turns 3 on
Aug 21. - can you believe it :)
SO - What about Karla - and Rita's surgery
My mom came out of the double knee replacement ... but please do continue to
pray for her recovery - as she is having a hard time of it. Also please pray for
the rest of my family. Thank you so much for your prayers. I'm still the
"traffic gal" on WSIX and WLAC (Nashville) from 6am to 4 pm.
Doug & Karla - back on the air ??
Please be in major prayer about this. We are looking to see if God would have us
return to the airwaves again. We are currently working on syndicating the show.
We have some stations interested and are looking into it. We are certainly the
last ones to try to put a "square peg in a round hole" - but know that if it's
His will - it will happen. We covet your prayers greatly on this - that God
would continue to open the doors - or would loudly - slam them shut. Thank you

Mark Ryder Update...
Some of you WAY FM listeners may remember Mark of the "Mark & Laurie" morning
show of a few years ago ... Mark went to be with the Lord. Here's the news from
the pages of CCM Update (July 16, 2001) : Radio Veteran Mark Rider Dies
MARK RIDER, probably one of the most recognized Christian DJs of the 80s and 90s
died suddenly Friday, July 6, in Dallas, Texas. Rider, program director for the
Dallas-based KLTY, had finished his work for the day when a security guard found
him unconscious in his car at the studio parking lot, having suffered a heart
attack.
Attempts to save him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at a Dallas
hospital shortly after 5 p.m. Rider, 44, was born Nov. 6, 1956 in Bastrop, La.,
where he was buried last week. Funeral services were held Monday, July 9, at
Sparkman Funeral Home Chapel in Richardson. Christian artist Wes King led the
music, and Rider's former Florida pastor led the services. Rider was remembered
by several colleagues and friends including King, KLTY's Jon Rivers, Buddy
Holiday and others. Rider is survived by his eight-year-old son Ethan, who lives
with his mother Ann in Nashville, and his wife Laurie, who is four months
pregnant with the couple's first child. On the PD Forum and throughout the
industry Rider was remembered for the kind way in which he encouraged beginners
to pursue their dreams in Christian radio. -Bob Thornton

D&K Update #5 // November 5, 2001
Dear Friends of Doug & Karla,
It's been a little while since our last update, and our world has certainly
changed since then. It's certainly sad that it took something so horrible to
bring out the best in so many people. We just keep reminding ourselves that God
IS in control ... and He does take what the enemy intended for evil and uses it
for good.
We continue to miss our time together, both as co-workers and spending time with
you. (( Yes Karla, I do miss the dog stories, the
had-to-rescue-the-kitty-on-the-way-to-work-stories ))
Last update we talked about the possible re-launching of "Doug & Karla" - and we
thank you for your prayers on that. At the time we were let go, all non-WAY FM
owned radio stations wanted us back on the air - and we perused a syndication
arrangement with them. However, under the current financial and global situation
- this is not possible. Stations are not able to take on any other financial
commitments, and we totally understand that. >From the beginning, we have said
that we don't want to shove a "round peg in a square hole". God will provide the
way, and we stand ready to serve God in whatever capacity He desires.
It's been encouraging to have so much support for what we did. It's been great
to run into so many people you come up to us (in the mall, restaurant, store,
movies, etc) and comment on the show, missing it, etc. We know that we made an
impact and served you well during our time together.
SO - what are we doing now ??
(Doug) As mentioned last time - I'm working for the Salem Music Network on the
"Today's Christian Music" format. There is not a local Nashville station that
carries this - but I am on over 110 station through out the US and Canada. Check
out - www.TodaysChristianMusic.com..
Also - I'm working on "The Fish" & "The Torch" - the 2 Christian stations that
Salem is providing for the new satellite radio technology. XM Satellite Radio -
check out www.XMRadio.com for details. **
During the morning hours on "The Fish" you CAN hear - the Best of Doug& Karla as
well as Officer Scott and "Crooks Get Busted". Satellite radio is like cable TV
- you buy a receiver, pay $10/month - and get 100 radio channels - including 3
Christian (( XM 31 - The Torch / XM 32 - The Fish, Christian Adult Contemporary/
XM 170 - Family Talk, teaching&preaching ))
(Karla) ...
Hello to all..Boy,it seems like forever since we have talked and shared what was
going on in our lives. Or maybe I am just going through withdrawal from telling
my animal stories! hee hee I have been very busy:working, taking care of my
mom, working on my tv show, and of course, saving animals. As you might have
guessed,I have a new member in the household! He is a 2 year old dog named
Dudley, who is part chihuahua, and part crazy..he has huge ears and loves to
snuggle, and we are very happy to have him. Duncan the one eyed wonder dog is
tolerating him, because he knows he will always be Top Dog in my heart! The cats
just roll their eyes and ignore him! This world seems to have gone crazy, hasn't
it?..I have to admit I have been feeling a roller coaster of emotions lately, and
Doug is probably glad we don't do the show now, because he would have to put up
with all my ranting! The world is indeed different now,but we know He is in
control and most importantly,we are His,and that is all that matters in the end!
So no matter what happens,we can have peace in these troubled times. I selfishly
ask for your prayers on a personal note, too. I have been traveling alot to spend
some time with my sweetheart, who I dated years ago,and we are trying to see what
God might have in store for our future. We are praying about it,and trying to
listen for His voice in it all! His name is Chris, and he lives in Boston, but
besides being a yankee he is sweet..(haa haa..I am just kidding to all of you
northerners!) I have to say I miss you all very much. I am blessed God has given
me a new job,but the connection and relationship we had with all of you is
missing in my heart now. You will always be so special to us! We hope to see you
again sometime down the road!

Again - thanks so
much for the prayers and support. We don't always understand why God allows
things to happen, and many times we don't understand why - but we continue to
hold on to Him - and (ya know) He continues to love us and use us ... in spite
of ourselves.
God Bless you !!!

Feb. 24, 2002
Dear friends of Doug & Karla,
Welcome to our 6th email update! I have to thank all of you who took the time to
surprise Karla on her birthday - that was very cool ... We'll start this update
off with Karla ...
Hello to all of our wonderful friends! Yes,even those who chose to believe what
a "little bird" told them, and sent me birthday greetings in LARGE PRINT! hee hee..
Thank you to each and every one of you who chose to be so sweet and brighten my
day! It was a wonderful surprise!
The update on my family goes like this: Mom is still recovering from her open heart surgery, and we had a bit of a setback. As you may know, the doctors told her she must quit smoking, but she ordered groceries and had cigarettes delivered, too. Now,imagine having OXYGEN on,and forgetting about it,and lighting up a cigarette! Well,God's angels were truly around her;she could have blown up her house, but she just got some burns to her face. I went over to see her,and she answered the door looking like Wiley Coyote after being blown up by the Road Runner. I only joke about this because it truly is a miracle that she is alive, and sometimes you have to laugh or you will cry! As for the guy in Boston, I am no longer flying to and fro,and God has given me a peace about the end of that relationship. I know that God has only the very best for us ,and the key is to be patient and to not try to create something and get ahead of God!
Kamp Karla is going strong, and Dudley is going to the doc this week because of tummy troubles. I think Duncan has taught him to steal food and his body can't handle it!I woke up the other night to find that the "kids" had dragged a box of Cheez-its into the bed, and the rustling of the package woke me up.What am I teaching these critters?
I am also getting ready to return to Kosovo for a mission trip this summer,if God allows me to. I have been blessed with some donations thus far,but I know if God wants me to go,He will provide the way. I will write more later to you about this!
I will close my part for now..but know that we still miss you all and we are blessed to have you be a part of our lives, even if it is only on email!
Love to all ... Karla
Doug here ... It's funny, so much of life is "show prep" for our radio show .. and since we are not "on the air" at the moment - we always call each other up and share the stories ... I'm crackin' up over the idea of Karla's mom as the Coyote :) Life moves on in my family. Baby-Man is growing and is the delight of my life. Currently he is a Blue Power Ranger or Superman ( I get to be batman and the Red Ranger ). I do appreciate your interest and support during this time of transition. We are currently talking with a few stations about returning to the air - we'll keep you up to date on how that pans out. Thanks always for your prayer support, and thanks to the many of you who have stopped us on the street, or via email and said "We miss you" ...Thanks!
Where can you hear us?
Karla is the voice of traffic - both morning and afternoon drive - on the "Big 98" WSIX, in Nashville
Doug is on the
air with XM Satellite Radio - Channel 32, The Fish - having just finished up
radio specials with Out of Eden, Plus One and Jars of Clay. Also - you can hear
Doug on the "Today Christian Music" network (heard on over 120 stations in the
US and Canada). For more info, check out

As Karla mentioned - we'll be getting a Kosovo update out soon ... Please keep

May 18, 2002
Dear Friends of Doug & Karla,
Wow - has it been a whole year? Yep - May 18th 2001 was the final Doug & Karla
Morning Show. Over the past year we thank you very much for your continued
interested, support and prayers.
(Doug here )
It has been (as my wife Sheryl says) "a stretch and grow" time. My testimony of
this past year is - God Provides. Through out it all - God has provided for me
and my family. He truly has. There have been times I have taken that for
granted, and have allowed myself to only see the negative. I'm trying now to
always see the glass half full. God has also shown me my importance right here -
He has reminded me of my place in ministering to my immediate circle of family
and friends.
Garic (Babyman) will be 4 in August - and Lauren will be 14 in October !! (New
pix on the web site) We have really grown to enjoy Franklin and Middle
Tennessee. I grew up in Northern California, but this has really been "home" to
us over the last 4 years. We want to stay here and raise our family. I look
forward to continued involvement with Christian Radio in this area and will keep
you posted on future developments.
(Here's Karla ...)
Hello sweet friends- has it been a YEAR?...wait,let me look in the mirror...yes,by
all indications(some more gray hair, a few wrinkles, another dog added to the
family)it HAS been a year! HEE HEE
I just want to start by thanking you for all the prayers for my mother during
this year. She has had total knee replacements, open heart surgery, and now
ongoing surgeries on her eyes(with another one scheduled for next week). We have
concluded that the doctors are rebuilding her part by part; pretty soon people
will think SHE is MY daughter! So THANK YOU for all the thoughts and prayers!
As for the rest of Kamp Karla: Duncan,Dudley,Moo and Peekie are doing fine.
Dudley is gaining weight at an alarming rate due to knocking the cats over and
stealing their food,so he is starting on an exercise plan! The cats, I am
convinced, are planning his demise. So when I go to work I have to put Dudley in
a safe place to insure his safety!
I have also been busy with working on some comedy tv shows; no one else really
laughs, but I do,so that is all that matters! hee hee (( See photos of Karla as
Dolly Parton at our web site ))
God has blessed me with continuing to speak and sing for youth groups in the
area; as a matter of fact,I am singing Sunday night at a Graduation dinner! This
has been so wonderful, and I have even been asked to play on a youth softball
team..but they might change their mind once they see how I play!
I have made some great friends here at my new job,and I am just praying for
God's direction in whatever I need to do next. Bloom where you are planted, right?
So we will see if He uproots me and just where He plants me next! I miss Doug
and, yes, even the way he makes fun of me and the animals...but I still call him
and make him listen to my stories anyway!
Again, thank you for your prayers and love and friendship throughout all the changes in our lives. You all have been a source or encouragement that has blessed my heart more times than I can even count!
We hope to see ya
soon down the road!
Karla and the Kritters
